Anyone inspired by videogame music?

Because I am and pretty much always have been, in fact; if not for listening to the Soundtrack to Streets of Rage when I was 12, I probably wouldn't have created this site you're using right now. Here's some of the greatest videogame tracks ever (in my opinion). What do you guys think@? Are any of you into videogame tracks too? And if so, what tracks are the absolute greatest?!

Ah, some very old school choices there. I'm inspired by a lot of videogame soundtracks, but couldn't name the tracks themselves. Recent (ish) standout games' music have been The Witcher, Beyond Good & Evil, Freedom Fighters, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Mirror's Edge and Amon Tobin's Splinter Cell soundtrack. I'm no thief but sometimes I'll be playing something and hear a note or melody and put the pad down, head into the studio and make an entire track in a few hours. Other things that can do that are ambient noises (the hum of a fan, workmen nearby, a cat purring, the wind in the trees); just about anything can inspire really. I play videogames pretty much every day and so yeah, I'd say enjoying the music is a big part of it. Sometimes you have to turn the music off...

I play videogames all the time and I gotta agree, the music can be totally sick. This shit don't get the respect it deserves imo.

Check out the "up up down down left right left right" mix by Hidden Fortress. Free download @ archive.org.

It's 8-bit-style music adapted into a more modern mix style. Good stuff. Of course, there are tons of other 8-bit-style music out there; I'm sure tons of other people will post links in this thread to them. I'm sure there are a number of 8-bit artists who are members of this network, actually...

I love videogame music and I think that most downtempo breakbeat orientated genres like Dubstep, Breaks, Glitch Hop, Chiptune obviously) and just about anything else you'd care to mention in the current electronic spectrum owe their existence to it. Good choice with the Streets of Rage thing. Absolute classic. I been thinking about doing a rmx of it for a while and I got the midi too so I almost definitely will. I also love, and I mean LOVE, the main title theme from Elder Scrolls Morrowind. It's the most epic thing I've ever heard. Lets not forget The Square soft games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger etc. Their soundtracks are incredible. Check out Nobuo Uematsu's band The Black Mages for Prog Rock covers of all the FF soundtrcks. You owe it to yourselves.

It has to be the Opening Credits to Megaman 2 on the NES!

VideoGame music heavily inspires me when making music, Chiptune especially. Some of my faves are final fantasy, mario, metroid, zelda, baiten kaitos, elder scrolls. For some reason the youtube videos didnt appear in my post :S

when i started composing eletronic music some of my tracks reminded me some videogame's music, and i was not afraid of this similarity. i don't play videogames but i think, as an architect, that it's a good way to explore and know virtual spaces and ambients, what means, ligth, sound and surfaces... all the best, Pterodata
