Mastering is a strange mystical thing.

I have a waves gold bundle. The good ol L1 will get you started there.

I've recently aquired Izotope Ozone "mastering" software. Its fun. Not easy to jump right into - but I've been having some luck with it recently.

Check out the Demo you can download. I believe it will work for 10 days. The presets that come with are cool. A little too compressed for my tastes tho.
You can also find about a billion other presets available for download on the web. Made by users. Most are crap...but you never know.

I used to use Soundforge like others here. Not so much anymore though.

I prefer using GarageBand on my Mac Mini because I have incredible flexibility to write and mix the way I want. My recommendation is if you're looking into using Pro Tools, don't UNLESS you're using a Mac. Audacity would be the better choice for anyone using a PC since Pro Tools has issues running correctly outside of its native operating system.

I do as much as possible in Ableton, then export the WAV into Soundforge.
In soundforge, I try and stick to just a bit of multiband compression and a little eq'ing if required.

GoldWave is OK, it's free nagware as I recall. audacity.sourceforge.net is also pretty damn cool and it's free. WaveLab is expensive, but it's the BOMB I tells ya, the BOMB. It's from a company called Steinberg.

The demo of Har-Bal is OK for trying it out, but not for serious us, as it's an 8-bit demo so the results are sketchy at best.

If you have Logic, try this step by step instrucion, i found it useful.. but you'll still have to play around a bit to get the exact sound you want.. http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/mixing-mastering/how-to-master-...

hope it helps!

What DAw are you using to make the tracks in the first place?

Yeah, mastering is an elusive thing...but I love using T-Racks 3...always a good place to start (don't bother getting the limited $200 one - just chill out and get the $500 one with all the bells and whistles)...the key to making a good master is to make a good recording first, IMHO....
